Five checks before you book any pet service

  1. Licence

Where one is needed (for example, home boarders and kennels in England), ask to see it.

  2. Insurance

Ask whether they hold public liability and care, custody and control cover.

  3. Reviews and references

Read recent reviews on more than one site, and ask for references.

  4. A visit first

Meet them, see the premises and watch how they handle your pet.

  5. Emergency plan

Ask how they’d reach you and your vet if something went wrong.

Independent pet shops and local suppliers

Local pet shops, feed merchants, aquatic centres and pet bakeries often stock specialist foods, give hands-on fitting for harnesses and carriers, and can order things in. When comparing them with online stores, look at:

  • Price per day for your regular food, including any loyalty scheme
  • Local delivery or click-and-collect
  • Refill stations and bulk buys for litter, hay and bird seed
  • Expert advice for small pets, fish and reptiles

Finding a vet

  • UK: use the RCVS Find a Vet search. Practices in the RCVS Practice Standards Scheme are inspected against set standards.
  • US: AAHA-accredited hospitals are evaluated against the American Animal Hospital Association’s standards.
  • Cats: look for a Cat Friendly Clinic accredited by International Cat Care.
  • Ask about out-of-hours emergency cover, health plans and how they share estimates.

Recommend a local pet business

Frequently asked questions

Do dog groomers need a licence?
In the UK, dog grooming isn’t licensed, so look for qualifications, insurance and good reviews. In the US, requirements vary by state and city.
Do home dog boarders need a licence?
In England, yes. Home boarding, kennels, catteries and dog day care need a licence from the local council, which gives a star rating from 1 to 5.
